FAQ

Common questions about seasonal allergies

What causes seasonal allergies?

Seasonal allergies are set off by allergens that shift with the time of year. The big ones are pollens the wind carries far: tree pollen in spring, grass pollen in late spring and summer, and ragweed in fall. Indoor pet dander and mold spores can flare too. Knowing your triggers and when they peak helps you plan around them.

Can allergies cause a fever?

No, allergies don't cause a fever. They bring sneezing, congestion, and itchy, watery eyes. If you have those symptoms plus a fever, it's likely something else, like a cold, the flu, a sinus infection, or COVID-19. A provider can sort it out at any AllCare clinic.

Does allergy skin testing hurt?

Not much. The test places tiny amounts of allergens on your skin with a light scratch or prick, which feels like a brief pinprick. Any reaction is usually mild and short-lived. Tell your provider if you're worried about discomfort or have a strong reaction.

Can I get allergies as an adult even if I’ve never had them?

Yes. There are many reasons you may develop allergies later in life. Immune system changes, exposure to new allergens in a new environment, such as a workplace or home, and stopping certain medications like antihistamines (which are also used to treat anxiety and insomnia); you may find you have seasonal allergies as an adult.

Can seasonal allergies be cured?

While there is no cure for seasonal allergies, you can reduce your symptoms with a little bit of work. Avoiding common triggers, wearing a mask outdoors when pollen counts are high, and using high-efficiency (HEPA) filters in your heating and cooling system are just a few tactics that may offer some relief.

Is it seasonal allergies or a cold?

Seasonal allergies and colds share many of the same symptoms, including sneezing, congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, fatigue, and headaches. However, you’re more likely to have an itchy nose and eyes if you’re experiencing seasonal allergies. In addition, cold symptoms usually resolve within seven to ten days, where allergy symptoms last as long as you’re exposed to the allergen.
