FAQ
Common questions about sunburn
How can you prevent sunburn?
Limit how much UV reaches your skin. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. Wear long sleeves, a hat, and sunglasses, seek shade during peak hours of roughly 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and check your local UV index before heading out.
What causes sunburn?
Sunburn comes from too much UV radiation, whether from the sun or tanning beds. That radiation damages the DNA in your skin cells and triggers the redness, pain, swelling, and peeling you feel afterward. How bad it gets depends on the strength of the UV, your skin type, and how long you were exposed.
Is telemedicine available for sunburn treatment?
Yes, AllCare Georgia offers telemedicine services for sunburn consultations. While in-person evaluations are ideal for assessing skin conditions, telemedicine allows for convenient discussions about symptoms and treatment plans. If you have a mild to moderate sunburn that isn’t getting better with at-home treatments, this is a good option.
When do you refer someone to a specialist for sunburn?
In severe cases, such as those involving extensive blistering, dehydration, or systemic symptoms like fever, headache, and vomiting, we may refer patients to a specialist or an emergency room for further care. Additionally, patients who develop sun spots or lesions alongside the sunburn will be referred to a dermatologist.
Can sunburn cause fever?
Yes. A severe sunburn can trigger a body-wide inflammatory response that brings on fever along with the skin damage. If you have a fever with a bad sunburn, stay hydrated and get medical care, since this can signal sun poisoning. Walk into any AllCare clinic.
How can I treat a bad sunburn at home?
For a mild sunburn, use cool compresses, aloe or a fragrance-free moisturizer, water, and ibuprofen for pain. Do not pop blisters. If it blisters widely or comes with fever, chills, or vomiting, get seen. Walk into any AllCare clinic for treatment.
How long does it take for sunburn to go away?
It depends on severity. Mild sunburns fade in three to five days, moderate ones can take a week or more, and severe sunburns with blistering and peeling may need two weeks or longer. Hydration and staying out of the sun speed healing. If it's severe, get seen.
